As "heavy" as the content sounds, the writing is fluid, logical, and interesting. How did we, Sapiens, as a species come to dominate the planet? How, for example, did we extinguish the Neanderthals, they of the bigger brains and far more brawn? It started with the first of the revolutions discussed, the Cognitive and our ability to share fictitious myths and realities that do not exist, along with a penchant for gossip. Other revolutions followed, the agricultural, and the scientific. Interesting observation that for billions of years the world changed by the slow process of evolution with little indication that there was any role played by "intelligent design" by in the last few hundred years, many changes have been caused by our own "intelligent" design. By many measures we have made enormous "progress", but I enjoyed the discussion as to whether this has made us happier. Also entranced by the discussion of "The End of Homo Sapiens" and the "Animal that Became a God" and the comment "Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don't know what they want?" Enjoy the book and prepare to think. A tip of the hat also for the great production quality of the book with clay coated pages to permit the reproduction of quality images the tome itself has a bit of heft.

They were able to tell stories and believe them, independent of physical reality.Everything from myth to religion to nations to moral codes to money are inter-subjective realities according to Harari. They have force in the physical world as long as people believe them, and cease to exist the moment people no longer believe them. This explains how people could cooperate in groups larger than 150, giving them a military and security advantage, and encouraging specialization which eventually gave them a technological advantage.Moreover, Harari claims (assumes) all these later sapiens were genetically identical, and that the variations in societies are purely cultural, i.e. inter-subjective realities. He presents history as an erratic evolution toward global unity, which is essentially demanded by the nature of inter-subjective realities, requiring belief of all those in mutual frequent contact, but he doesn't say how.In fact, Harari presents only anecdotal evidence for his claim. He presents no empirical studies regarding the flexibility of humans toward inter-subjective realities, and no mathematical models of its development, evolutionary advantage, or stability. He describes the scientific method as an important development, and requires it to include both mathematical models and verification of them. But he does not use either in his treatise. Thus he presents an important and interesting hypothesis, but not in a scientific manner. He makes not even suggestions as to how to further formulate or verify it as a scientific theory. Perhaps he is trapped in the inter-subjective reality of history as liberal arts, not science.The term "intersubjective" does exist in the literature of psychology and philosophy, primarily as a synonym for "agreement," but there is no agreement about its definition (Gillespie and Cornish 2009, Journal for Theory of Social Behavior) state:"The concept of intersubjectivity is used widely, but with varying meanings. Broadly speaking, we take intersubjectivity to refer to the variety of possible relations between people’s perspectives. If we take social life to be founded on interactions then intersubjectivity should be a core concept for the social sciences in general and understanding social behaviour in particular. Perhaps because of this broad relevancy research has been fragmented and at least six definitions are in circulation. Most simplistically, intersubjectivity has been usedto refer to agreement in the sense of having a shared definition of an object."The biggest complaint I have about Harari is that he does not distinguish between his opinion and facts, nor explain the background of how he arrived at the theory of inter-subjectivity. The study of the evolution of cooperation is a hot topic, with political scientists, biologists, mathematicians and even physicists all having theories, and much data collected and many math models developed. It is apparent Harari is aware of this, but does not tell us how his theory fits in. I can only conclude he finds his powers of popular persuasion greater than his powers of scientific persuasion and critical analysis, so he writes a long book instead of a focused research paper.By the way, you can find excellent video summaries and reviews of this book on the web, and even a "summary" for sale as an eBook. I originally got interested from the video summary.Near the end Harari reports on happiness research. In this section of the book he takes exception to his usual approach, giving us descriptions of studies and names of researchers so we can trace where these conclusions come from. The book is worth reading for this section.Occasionally Harari gets facts wrong. You won't realize this unless you have investigated the matter separately. I noticed it because his description of the origin of the caste system in India was wrong, according to current research.Harari tries to present himself as outside modern factions (or inter-subjective realities), such as nature vs. nurture, liberalism vs. conservatism, etc. But without conscious explication, he suffuses his book with the assumption that any modern human if taken from birth is equally at home in any of the current or historical inter-subjective realities. He does not propose or even consider experiments to determine culture-vs-genetics. So he proposes this important genetic ability evolved in a small population on a single continent between 130kya and 70kya, but that no differentiating evolution has occurred since then.The question of whether the degree or style of inter-subjectivity is as universal as he implies is important for several reasons. Harari proposes the world is "different" since 1945, with no war between major powers, no more empires expanding by territorial acquisition. He suggests some reasons for this (cost of nuclear war, for example) which are unverified. His book was completed in 2014 before Russia claimed parts of Ukraine and China claimed the entire South China Sea. If inter-subjective capacity is universal, then this situation is likely unstable. People could quit believing it at any moment, and the world could return to any state that it has been in historically. If inter-subjective capacity is not identical in everyone, then it might make a great deal of difference which cultures dominate, even if through historical accident. See for example Boyd and Richerson 2009 Culture and the Evolution of Human Cooperation.So, it is a book full of powerful ideas, often with carefully balanced arguments on both sides, but beware of accepting the background assumptions without critical thinking, or you will just fall into the latest meme.

I bought the book based on high rating but was disappointed. The beginning part was ok but later I felt more and more not reading actual (scientific) facts but only the author's own opinions REPEATEDLY which were presented in a bad way. I tried to continue to finish the book but it was not an easy task. Anyway, not a good book for me,

Never before have I reviewed a book after 2300 others have done the same. Who's going to read 2300 reviews and who will read this? Surely a waste of time for a lot of people including me. Now that I am past that let me state that Harari gives a heckeva good read. This is not the usual rise and fall of empires and kingdoms but a broad ranging overview of how we got here. Parts of it were downright fascinating such as "imagination" being a keystone to human activity, e.g. corporations, money, and religion.Something I found really different and pleasing was his discussion of things where he had no real answer. In the case of all cultures being patriarchal he gives three or four possible reasons. That's good enough for me as there is still no real answer. I find that fair and enlightening. He also does something different as he uses the pronoun "she" throughout the book instead of the previously required male pronoun. Finally he keeps touching on the fact that animals have paid a terrible price for the rise of sapiens. From hunter-gatherer days to the factory farms of today they have suffered. He's right. Incidentally our family has a farm background and I eat no chicken, turkey, pork, or beef. Ever been in a confinement barn?Now I didn't give the book five stars because he makes positive references to the misguided but widely read Jared Diamond. He borrows a fair amount from Diamond, for example, in that hunter-gatherers were happier than folks today. Let me emphasize that on this snowy March day the cat and I are both glad we don't need to go out and scavenge something off the frozen earth.Finally, beware of the paper back edition. It has incredibly cheap paper and tiny print. If you purchase the book look for a hard cover. I now consign this review to oblivion. . .still I liked the book.

Let me tell you how good this book is... I would give this a 10 star !! I already read The Gateway Trilogy book 1 & went onto this book, I was at work, my boss had to leave, I was done with my work but I had a 1:00 Web Conference meeting with my peers. I decided to wile away the time by reading this book, next thing I know my co workers messages me as to how I thought the Web Conference went. Startled because I was suppose to be on that call I looked over at my clock and it was 2:30 !! I MISSED THE MEETING !!!! That was how immersed I was in the story, I was not even aware of the time. I totally freaked out because I was suppose to report back to my boss when he came back on the subject of the Conference call and I missed it because I was reading this book. I have never --ever--don't this before. The two sisters and the ghosts, and going to the school totally disarmed me. I love the story and the characters and I have already purchased book 3

I'm am absolutely in love with this series. I want to cry, yell, and throw things because book three is not out yet! If you loved the first book like I did, you will seriously die in this sequel. I didn't think I could love the second more than I did the first, but I did! I am sitting here amazed that I may have just found one of, if not my most favorite paranormal series ever! You will be doing yourself a favor by starting this one right now. I cannot wait for book three because this ending has me dying!Ah! So many feels!

The series was well written. You liked/disliked the characters and at times were confused on who was the bad guy. The only thing I wished was to dive into Hannah's past a little more. Maybe a prequel to the series. You know the father but what was going on with her mother. I can see one more book focusing on the past. Good job.

This book was not very well written, there were lots of grammatical errors (much like in this review) and repetition of certain things I could tell that this was something the author was new at. These are the reasons I didn't give it 5 stars.That being said the story itself was very original and very captivating. There are books that you just can't finish because of all the stuff wrong with them, but even with all the little loose ends in this book the story still had the power to hold me as a reader. I couldn't put it down. The second book Spirit Prophecy was written better that the first and I would highly recommend both of them.I can't wait for the 3rd book and more from this author who has a brilliant talent for storytelling. Great job EE!!! Can't wait for your next book

when jess and Hannah first arrived at Fairhaven I was thinking that this place is awesome. but there is always bad apples in the bunch. when the silent child all but attacked jess I was super surprised. I still can't figure out Finn but I am excited to see what is his problem. I have to say that I suspected that Hannah and Jessica's father was one of the protectors and I believe that Carrick knows who. I am still not sure if the silent child can be fully trusted and I can't wait to see what happens next.

I truly hope and am anticipating a follow-up of this trilogy!! I couldn't wait to get all my daily chores done to spend my evening reading this and all of the books of the trilogy!! E.E. Holmes has to be the best author that I have read in ages!! I am 80 years old and have always been an avid reader, please let me know before I get much older what happens to Jess, Hannah and Milo!!

I completely devoured this book in just a couple of evenings, even missing new fall shows on TV and didnt care! I wish someone would go through it again and fix all the mistakes, there are a lot of them. However, the writing was fantastic and I highly recommend. Off to go start book 3!

You know exactly when you've hit the end of the story and realize, "Oh crap! The next book isn't out yet!!!" Well, I'm there and now eagerly await the next installment of the completely mesmerizing trilogy. While I would normally wait till ALL the books have been released, before starting a series like this, I AM happy I have read the first two books and Milo's story. I now find myself in the unfortunate position of The Eagerly Awaiting Game!Excellent! Must read!

Almost a step by step walk through guide which will teach you how to go much further than you may ever have before in penetration testing, etc >;). One of the better guides for absolute beginners with a rudimentary understanding of the Linux OS. Sorry but Linux forums (specifically Backtrack) can be treacherous with many arrogant and ignorant admins suffering from the "God" complex, go on one for yourself and you'll see.This book helps you to get the imperative points you need to be able to operate Backtrack (and even Kali to a point) without having to put up with the beatdown you'll often get on the forums.Very well explained and detailed just enough so that you shouldn't have any problems figuring most things out for yourself. Insight and tips included to make the experience more rewarding also. Definitely one of the better Linux books I've read in the last few years and worth the small investment.

This book covers pretty much everything you would need to know in order to perform a professional wifi pentest. Wireless hacking is pretty easy to do relative to a number of other things you would do in the world of offensive security mainly due to the fact that you need not have any programming experience to pull it off.Much of it is simply a matter of memorizing the proper terminal commands and knowing when to use them, and this book covers this perfectly. Some of the things included in this book are:-How to install BackTrack 5 and set up a hack lab-General information on WLAN frames and the 802.11 protocol system-Some basic use of Wireshark to collect information on the network or area you are in (you'll know why https is important)-Cracking WEP, WPA, WPA2, and even getting past things like MAC filtering-Denial of service attacks (a complete jackass could really abuse this information if they are in a coffee shop)And so on. I won't go into too much detail except to say that this book can be used by anyone with no prior BackTrack experience so long as they are willing to set some time aside to try the things in this book. It truly gets right to the point about how to perform an attack first (so impatience is less of a problem) and then explaining why you ended up with the result that you got (if the attack was done correctly).For anyone interested in BackTrack, Wifi cracking, or hacking in general, this book is a must have!

well writen. If any one can not follow this book, then you cannot follow directions. I bought the hardware as directed, but added my own twist to make this book work for me and my intentions. I also like the the fact that it makes you work for that extra info. The info is out there, if I wanted to know more then I researched it. if anyone says they have read this book and it did not work for them then they cannot follow directions, or they want it (knowledge) handed To them. I am well versed in theory, I like to get my hands dirty and get to work. Time for some action. Wish more books were written like this. Good work.

I've read this book at least 3 times! If you're new to Backtrack 5 and the Aircrack suite of tools then you must read this book. It's great for beginners and intermediates. I would recommend some basic Linux skills, but it's really not required. Vivek explains the commands in a concise way. You'll learn how to crack WEP and WPA/WPA2. Learn how to use airmon, aircrack, aireplay, airodump, airolib, airdecap, genpmk, cowpatty, pyrit, and more. He also explains how to create various wifi filters in Wireshark and gives just enough background to understand the all of the commands. You'll also create rogue access points with airbase and how to a bridge interfaces with brctl. Vivek is the inventor of the Caffe Latte attack, which is used to attack WEP using just the client as the target. The end of every chapter has a pop-quiz to test what you've learned, and at the end of the book he brings it all together with a WLAN pen-testing methodology including planning, discovering, attacking, and reporting. The appendix includes many resources to help you build an advanced wifi lab.In summary: A very hands-on book that guides you -- step-by-step, start to finish -- in executing a successful wireless penetration test. It also has very high re-use value.I would highly recommend getting an Alfa wireless adapter along with this book. I bought the Alfa model AWUS036H here on Amazon for about $35USD.

This is the book that first introduced me to network security. Actually all I wanted to do was learn how to hack my router, and I learned that and so much more. This single book has made me decide to pursue a career in information security. The book itself is written elegantly in very easily understandable terms. It assumes no prior knowledge to the topics included and it is very beginner friendly (as the title suggests.) The author is absolutely brilliant and it is worth noting that this author is the "security tube wifi security expert" course instructor (which I just enrolled in not long ago.) I think I've read this book twice from cover to cover, and probably 10 times over using it for reference. You start the book with no assumed knowledge of linux, backtrack, or wireless pentesting at all, and end the book with the knowledge to conduct a full penetration test on a wireless network from beginning to end. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about wireless network security. If there was a 10 start option i would have selected that.

I bought this for an intro soil science class. I didn't even open it for the class, but it did come in handy as a reference book when I tried to apply some soil science principles to real-world problems later. Over time, we tend to forget things. So it was very useful to keep this textbook so that I could go look up some basic soil science that I forgot over the summer. It's pretty well organized and easy to understand, as long as you got a B or better in a general chemistry class first.

Was required but not required for a class type deal. I didn't use it much which was nice since i just rented it! I would suggest just renting!

I will definitely be buying loose leaf from now on. You can carry it anywhere with you, with as little or many chapters as you like, reducing weight. The condition was new.

I bought this book ($109, new) for a class on soils and the environment. I will be honest, I did not read the whole book. I read a few chapters. I do know that my professor had issues with one or two of the chapters, (chapter 10?), dealing with microbes (so keep an eye out). That being said, its not a hardcover book, and is worded so that you can read it with flow (not choppy writing). This is a good book, I wish books were not as expensive. Shipping was great, arrived on time. The class was great, deep learning about the world of Soils.

The detailed outlay of the book is very enlightening and thorough in its approach to deliver knowledge regarding many things, 'soil'. I have learned a treasure load of goodies from this book regarding the science of soil and other practical implications as well.

It's a textbook, not much to say. But it was clean with no marks in it.

According to my professor, this is one of the very best textbooks on this subject. The course has turned out to be life-changing: there is no life on land without soil!This looseleaf version arrived in perfect condition, well packaged, no dog ears or such. Save some money!

I am using this textbook for my Soils class. It is easy to read and has lovely pictures to help explain topics. I haven't used it as much as I should for the class, but it is helpful when I do. Which probably means I should probably read it some more... :)I ordered this book in loose-leaf form and it works perfectly. I have it in a binder with my lab manual. Don't be afraid to save money!
