About the Author

William J. Chambliss, professor of sociology at The George Washington University, was a critical sociological theorist whose research has ranged broadly from studies of law creation and the legal system to participant observation studies of juvenile gangs, organized crime, policing, and the impact of social movements on political and economic change. He served as president of the American Society of Criminology and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. He has received numerous awards for his research and teaching, including the prestigious Edwin H. Sutherland Award from the American Society of Criminology, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association, the Bruce Smith Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the PASS Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sociology of Law Section of the American Sociological Association. He has authored and edited over 35 books in sociology, criminology and criminal justice and numerous articles in social science journals.

Daina S. Eglitis is an associate professor of sociology and international affairs and director of the undergraduate program in the Department of Sociology at The George Washington University. Her research highlights sociological dimensions of change in the post-communist world, with a particular focus on stratification, poverty, and gender. She has been the recipient of Fulbright, IREX, and Open Society awards and is the author of several articles and a book on post-communist social change. She also writes for and about teaching in the undergraduate classroom and is the author of the article, “The Uses of Global Poverty: How Inequality Benefits the West,” and the Teaching Sociology article, “Performing Theory: Dramatic Learning in the Theory Classroom.”

About the Author
Dr Anna Meroni is assistant professor at the INDACO (Industrial Design, Arts, Communication and Fashion) Department of the Politecnico di Milano University, Italy, a Training and Research Centre in Design. She investigates service from the perspective of strategic social innovation, with a specific emphasis on community centred design. Her main research areas are food systems and innovative housing for sustainable lifestyles. Dr Meroni is co-director of the international Master in Strategic Design and a visiting professor and scholar in schools and universities around the world. She is active in the launch and promotion of the international network DESIS, Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability. Dr Daniela Sangiorgi is a lecturer at ImaginationLancaster, the creative research laboratory at the Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts (Lancaster University, UK). As one of the early scholars looking into Service Design, she has gained international recognition. Her work has been mapping and supporting this emerging field of study and research since its outset. Her doctorate has investigated services as complex social systems, proposing holistic and participatory approaches to Service Design. Recent work has been exploring the role of Design and participation within public services reform, with a focus on commissioning for healthcare. She has been one of the founders of the Service Design Network and Service Design Research initiatives.

About the Author

Amalendu Chakraverty, a former professor at the Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur, was engaged in teaching and research in postharvest technology and food engineering for nearly 30 years. He had the opportunity to be associated with the rice/grain, fruit, and vegetable processing industries for a long period and visited various rice milling/processing machinery manufacturing industries in Japan and India. I follow her on youtube and she say she wrote a book. She always give interesting and unique advice so I figure I would like her book. I love this book. It fun to read and her thought and advice are really interesting. They give me a unique look at situation and life. One of my favorite topic was about friendship. It really help me understand the concept since I have always struggled with making good friend. I think anyone will love this book. It just so much fun to read, funny, deep, sweet, and unique.

I don't usually read books often because it doesnt entertain me like other stuff but I've always watched Anna's YouTube videos and so I figured I'll buy the book and read a few chapters and go on from there. Feel hours later and I love reading this book.

I wasn't expecting it to be as much of a self-help book as it was. Whereas about half of the book came from a very genuine voice that felt like Anna coming to terms with certain subjects, the other half felt like it could've come out of any generic self-help book. Especially around the middle of the book, much of it starts to come off as gratuitous padding rather than genuine essays about her struggle of her sister's lingering memory interacting with her life. I'm sure some people NEED to read those parts of this book if they're in denial that they're in a similar situation, but I don't think I fall into that category.Anna's written voice shines much better in the beginning and end of the book, where the stories are much more personal and more about forming a narrative rather than "here's an example of why you should be doing ________". These sections were a much less arduous read, I just wish there were more of them in the book.Overall, it was enjoyable enough. Definitely not required reading, but if you enjoy Anna's content online you'll probably enjoy this.

I simply love this book. It has a very unique voice to it (as you can probably assume if you are a fan of Anna on YT). The book covers a wide variety of topics (again just like her YT videos), and is a very laid back down to earth approach - duh! it is written like it is to her sister! This book never once lost my interest while I was reading, which was really impressive to me as few books can do that! I finished the book in two sittings because it just caught my interest so well. It would have been one sitting, but I had other things to do that caused me to have to postpone my reading.

Anna Akana's narration brings truth to her words in a way simply reading can't match. At just under four hours, the audiobook is a bit short, but the content is worthwhile, especially for those in the creative fields. Much like "Born Standing Up," Steve Martin's memoir, what this lacks in length, it makes up for in replayability. I've listened to this in it's entirety 3 times, listening to chapter 2, however, many more.Akana's honest take on her flaws and failures is so refreshing, given the social pressures to hide any imperfections and only show your "best life" in public.Highly recommend.

I wasn't expecting this book to be so dynamic, as it was coming from a "youtuber", but Anna has always shown her brilliance throughout her videos and short films so I took a chance and put down the money to buy this book, my gamble payed off big time. As I started divulging more deeply into her book, I was shook. The personal details that she confesses throughout her earlier years of life are perspective changing. I believe that Anna's audience is mostly female, and her video's reflect toward that viewer base as she tackles sensitive topics such as rape victims being shunned ,self-harm, and female sexual fantasies. From a male's perspective, I am glad I was able to read this book because it highlights some of the strongest struggles that women face on a daily basis to this day, the struggles that men SHOULD BE EDUCATED about. Women being perceived as submissive, unintelligent, and reusable sex objects, Anna goes down a plethora of subjects but those are just a few I could name off the top of my head. This is the reason why I have stayed subscribed to her for over 2 years, because Anna separates herself from the casual fluffy female YouTuber and brings critical topics to light while still maintaining the integrity of both sides of an argument logically. This book was so powerful that i actually wanted to to write a review about it, if that's not enough to convince you how much I like it, then idk what else will. If you have some side cash laying around, grab a copy of this and treat yourself.

Anna Akana is a role model! My girlfriend and I love her Youtube channel and when she promoted her book we just had to get it! Anna is so talented and not only that she has a lot going on in both her mind and her life. Which is inspiring to see her side of it all!I would recommend this book to: Any one who enjoys her youtube, movies, or countless other projects that she has developed. Also to any one who is going through a tough time emotionally. Reason being she has first hand experience with some pretty hard hitting stuff emotionally, and she really reach out to every one trying to spread a little good and joy in the world!Loved the Book

I love Anna Akana and her youtube content. This book definitely reflected her work and career and charisma. If you have lost your attention span to the internet this book is also a great segway into reading real books because so many chapters are so short. Like 1 or 2 pages. No complaint there. Easy read for a distracted person whose mind changes one subject or story to the next so easily. If you are like that and want a book to read. This is the book for you!

This book is initially wonderfully inviting - but quickly frustrating. It's filled with photos of great pieces and is really full of great ideas. The unfortunate thing is that the 250 tips are hardly complete. The instructions, although attempting to be step-by-step, leave out so much that they are at times completely useless. It's akin to reading instructions written by a manufacturer in China who doesn't speak English. I find myself flipping to previous pages asking "did I miss something? How do I get to this first step? How do I get from this to final?" I think the book offers strong ideas, but you better have the skills already in your tool kit.

I got this thinking it would be stuff that people learn after much trial and error...you know, "trade secrets", like the title. The info is very basic and very brief so it covers a little about a lot...which I guess is good if you know near to nothing about the subject. I don't know a whole lot about clay but as I said, I was hoping for something that would teach me things that I didn't know. I guess I already know a little about a lot so it was fairly useless for me. That said, the information that was given was clear with nice pictures etc. But just not enough of it. I would probably be better off with something all about just a few subjects as opposed to trying to cover it all in one swoop.Overall, this might be the book if you want to see what ceramics/pottery entails and if it's something you want to embark on. But if you already know, get a different, more specific book.

I purchased a pottery wheel six months ago and have been teaching myself to throw and handbuild. I purchased several instructional books on the subject and I found this one to be the most helpful and inspiring. I don't know that it would be as usefull to the intermediate or experienced potter, but for a beginner its great!

This book is EXCELLENT! All very useful tips and if you are not a novice it's very easy to apply them. It's like a notebook of reminders and sensible tricks that make a potters life easier and in most of the cases saves money. I can't stop going through the pages, not in any order but a nice cover-all little guide.I didn't give it 5 stars because I was expecting a larger size, but since I have to use glasses in either case, I kinda like the more portable size... it's going in and out of the studio w/me all the time. Enjoy!

The book is set up nicely with good step by step and pictures to help guide you. I felt it would be better for beginners as there weren't too many things I hadn't already read about or even tried myself already. Overall a handy resource for your potters library if you're fresh out of ideas.

Lots of short tips on different aspects of pottery. Don't expect in-depth discourse on techniques with this book but do expect a lot of short and to the point answers for many aspects of clay working. I would buy it again and am so glad it is available am an e-book since that is where I read most of my books these days.

I am using a sculpting clay and want to move on to potter's clay. I don't know anything about clay, kilns, firing and all that, this book filled me in. The book concentrates on making pots but is full of useful information about potter's clay in general.Now I know what to ask clay suppliers. Also can ask my potter friends intelligent questions.

I want to make it clear that I'm no sell out, no bitter bitch who secretly wants to see a certain chapter burned to the ground; no ex sorority prospect turned religious; no victim vilifying my past experiences in hopes of garnering sympathy; nor am I a starving author in search of a paycheck. I'm a writer. That's it. I chose to write this book as an act of closure, a way to express my feelings, and a way to say goodbye to the person I used to be.
